Such Good Boys by Tina Dirmann (October 2005)

Such Good Boys is a horrific look into the life of two young boys growing up with a mother who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

Jason Buitista, along with his younger brother Matthew Matejo, suffered a horrific childhood growing up with their mother, Jane Buitista, who suffered from a severe mental illness. Despite her constant moving, admissions to coaches, etc. that “celebrities” who were angry at her were after her, and her strange behavior observed by neighbors, no one ever reported her for what was oblivously a mental disturbance. Even Jane’s own family ignored her illness, instead sending a check every month; never once taking into consideration what terror her two young sons could be living in.

In the end, Jason could no longer handle it. Despite past attempts to move away, his mother continued to reel him in and an attachment to his younger brother made him stay. Somewhere, somehow it had to end though…and end it did one January night in 2003.

Readers are giving a very insightful view, without bias, into the life that could lead a young man with such potential to kill his mother. Readers will shocked and appalled at the ignorance of family, neighbors, and others who never sought to help Jane’s children.

If there is one downside to this book, it would be that it was written by a newspaper reporter and, therefore, can, at times, be repeatitive as news articles are prone to do when reminding readers of the details.

This was such an excellent read that I completed the book within less than 24 hours. I simply could not put it down!
