A Descent Into Hell: The True Story of an Altar Boy, a Cheerleader, and a Twisted Texas Murder by Kathryn Casey

Not the Best of Casey
Review by Kim Cantrell

A Descent Into Hell by Kathryn CaseyIn their earlier years, Jennifer Rae Cave and Colton Aaron Pitonyak had been relatively good kids; a high school cheerleader and an alter boy respectively, but that life was long over. Now life revolved around the next high. And college, sometimes.

As it’s prone to do, drug-enhanced relationships end on a sour note when one junkie decides to get clean; which is what Jennifer was intending to do. But this time it ended in murder.

On August 17, 2005, for reasons that may never be fully known, Colton shot and killed Jennifer then hacked up her body. By the time it was discovered by Jennifer’s mother two days later, Colton had fled to Mexico with a long time admirer Laura Hall. (Just a thought: Although the U.S. seldom deports its illegals, Mexico had no problem toss the killer and his accomplice back across the border to be arrested in record time!)

A Descent Into Hell: The True Story of an Altar Boy, A Cheerleader, and a Twisted Texas Murder recounts the high times of Jennifer and Colton and the final act of their relationship.

I don’t know if it’s the people in this story or I’ve just been spoiled by her previous books, but I’m sad to say that this newest from author Kathryn Casey just isn’t her best work.

The bit in the title referring to the “altar boy” and “cheerleader” is a bit misleading as these were roles maintained by the victim and killer when they were much, much younger; long before their days as strung out college students. These references should have actually been “spoiled brat” and “troubled teen”.

Is it worth reading? Well, yeah. Just don’t expect it to compare to Casey’s other books.

UPDATES FROM THIS BOOK:

Colton Pitonyak is incarcerated at the French M. Robertson State Prison in Abilene, Texas. He will be eligible for parole in February 2033.

Laura Hall‘s recent attempt at parole was unsuccessful. However, if she can stay out of trouble, she’s expected to be released on December 20, 2012. (Boy, wouldn’t it suck for her if the Mayan calendar was right in predicting the end of the world on the 21st of December?!)
