As with all of Carlo's books I've read, especially those focusing on the Mafia, I couldn't stop reading The Butcher: Anatomy of a Mafia psychopath. I'd sit for hours and read chapter after chapter, and never get bored or lose interest.

And in a masterstroke - which is evident in all of his books, the story is NOT all about the violence, murder and mayhem - it delves into what DROVE Pitera to do what he did, as well as at the same time, charting his criminal career, the seemingly never-ending problems faced by the many officers working to bring him to justice, and also what was known about his personal life, from childhood right through to the time he was imprisoned.

Which ultimately presents a chilling, brutal, but frighteningly real individual, that sticks with you long after you finish the book.

All of the characters, the world, their actions and the repercussions, all are fleshed out fully and make you feel as if you were stood behind him all the way through, silently watching him.
