Hey, Nancy Grace, Pull Your Head Outta Your Butt About Ronald Cummings

Why Is She So Blind?
Editorial by Kim Cantrell

I have trouble explaining it, how I came to be so emotionally attached to the story of missing child Haleigh Marie Cummings.

Maybe it was because she went missing just a couple of weeks following the birth of my last child. During those early morning feedings, I would watch reruns of Nancy Grace about the case.

Maybe it was the atrocious family dynamic that surrounded this beautiful child that kept me hooked; like a car wreck, you just can’t look away.

Irregardless of how or why I became so engrossed in this story, I have never faltered in my belief that her father, Ronald Cummings, played a large role in her disappearance.

Yet, Nancy Grace repeatedly lays claim to her disbelief that Ronald was involved.

Is she blind? Deaf? Or just stupid?

From the first time I heard his call to 911, my gut instinct told me he was being over dramatic; trying just a bit too hard to be convincing.

Now, lest I be accused of being arrogant again, let me say that I do not know how I would react if one of my children was missing – and I pray to God I never have to find out – but, being a crime follower, I’ve heard more than my fair share of 911 calls from parents of missing children and NEVER have I EVER heard a parent react as he did. Not only was it his colorful vocabulary but his anger at law enforcement for not responding fast enough.

I’ve heard plenty of pleading. I’ve heard calls cut short from impatience. But never have I heard a parent berate the very people they are counting on to help.

Next, let me move along to search. While search teams were organized and sent to scour every inch of Putnam County, Ronald Cummings did very little of his own searching. On one occasion his mother, Teresa Neves, made the statement that he wasn’t searching that day because “he didn’t have anyone to search with.”

Huh? I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be reliant on a search party to look for my missing child!

Then came Ronald’s marriage proposal to Misty. Just a little over a month since his child disappeared, the couple tied the knot because that’s “what Haleigh wanted.” How can a parent even think of such a thing when they have no clue what happened to their child?

Of course, when Ronald was questioned about Misty’s inability to tell the same story twice about Haleigh’s disappearance, his retort was the tired old line “Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.”

So, we’re supposed to believe that this apparent Godfather-wannabe married Misty to get to the truth?

Yeah, okay. Whatever. I and many others believe that this “enemy” was kept close to make sure she kept her mouth shut.

Then came the creepy $400 tattoo Ronald had done on his leg of Haleigh’s face. If the time frame (March 2009) wasn’t questionable in itself, that $400 was spent at a time when donations to aid in the search for Haleigh are pouring in from around the world is.

And, within a year, here came a divorce between the “happy” couple; alleged to have come about because Ronald didn’t believe Misty any longer.

Suddenly Ronald’s family who had been so supportive of Misty was ready to sell her out in a heartbeat.

It was here that I thought Nancy Grace was finally getting a clue. During one episode, she called Ronald out about lying to her. Even appeared to become angered by his obvious lies.

But it didn’t last long…only a couple of episodes later, she’s back to making the statement that she doesn’t believe he was involved in Haleigh’s disappearance.

Are you freakin’ kidding me?

While it may all be circumstantial, the evidence speaks volumes. Although his participation may not have been hands on, his contributions are clear.

Even if we are to believe that he did not conspire with anyone to get rid of Haleigh or that his own criminal activities didn’t place the child in danger of abduction, there is no way to excuse the crime of child neglect when he VOLUNTARILY left Haleigh in the charge of an underage girl who he KNEW had been on a three day drug binge!

Now here sits Misty, Ronald, and her brother Tommy in the jail on drug charges; clear evidence that these aren’t upstanding citizens. Not to mention that, although divorced because Ronald now believed Misty had something to do with Haleigh’s disappearance, the two were dealing drugs TOGETHER!

And the longer Misty sits there, the closer law enforcement comes to a resolution of the Haleigh Cummings case.

Just earlier today, Ronald and Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh’s biological mother, were told to make funeral arrangements following the discovery of bones in the St. John’s River; although, according to reports, they have not been confirmed to be that of Haleigh.

But how much more is it going to take for Nancy Grace to pull her head out of backside and get a clue? She’s coiled like rattle snake ready to strike out at Crystal for being a horrible mother (who, in my opinion, is not a bad mother just a beaten down one; but I’ll save that for another day), yet she keeps catering to Ronald’s lies.

Come up with all the excuses in the world such as he’s an informant or, to use his own words, “I don’t know, I was at work.”  Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.  Whatever.   Ronald’s not that smart, and the best laid plans always include an alibi.

But you can’t convince Nancy Grace and (much of) her following.

Well, “Miss Nancy” and company, all I gotta say is if you look like a tool, you probably are.
