Sanity. Priceless.
Review by Kim Cantrell
Nancy Kissel had money.
Lots of money. Think millions upon millions of dollars.
Her husband, Rob Kissel, was a very successful investment banker.
But while money can buy a lot of things, it cannot buy happiness.
And Nancy was very unhappy.
The Kissels were no stranger to disfunctionality. While Nancy had her own Mommy-abandoment issues, the Kissels lived in the shadow of an overly critical father; a self-made millionaire who was never one for praise but a quickdraw of insults and tyranny.
When Rob moved his family to Hong Kong to pursue his career in 1998 and the insanity took a fatal turn.
In 2003, amid an affair with a Vermont man, Nancy killed Rob and attempted to hide his body in the storage room of their glamorous Hong Kong high rise.
Her motive: she could no longer take the abuse; abuse with roots in greed, drugs, power, and, one is led to believe, a closeted sexual preference.
Is it the truth or an excuse?
Joe McGinnis, well know for his journalistic integrity, details Rob’s murder and the insanity that ensued – or, as it should be said, reached its peak – in his book Never Enough.A most appropriate title.
I had avoided reading this book for a while because I had watched a television documentary on the case and didn’t find it very interesting.
Not the case with McGinnis’ book. With his own unique writing style, McGinnis manages to take this trainwreck (though deserving of the less flatttering term clusterf*ck), organize it, and turn it a story that grips the reader from page one.
And just when readers think one issue has been resolved, think again. Twists and turns dominate this book!
Never Enough is a MUST READ true crime!

Updates:
In February 2010, a Hong Kong appeals Court remanded Nancy’s case back to trial court on the basis of material errors. While Nancy was ordered to remain in custody pending a new trial, a date has not been set.
The children remain the custody of Rob’s sister, Jane Kissel Clayton, and live in the state of Washington.
