Friday Fiction: Broken by Karin Slaughter (June 2010)

Confusion is Starting In the Middle
Review by Kim Cantrell

Karin Slaughter is a well-established author who has created a series about several unique characters living in a small Georgia town.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware when I chose to read her latest release, Broken, that it was a book deep into the series.

So I walked away confused; only after reading other reviews did I become aware of it’s right place and that I should have read the others first to get the “whole picture.”

In Broken, Dr. Sarah Linton once again meets up Will Trent; a man who suffers dyslexia to the point of illiteracy but has still managed to work his way through the ranks of law enforcement to the position of GBI Agent.

When Sarah senses something is amiss at the Grant County jail following the death of a mentally challenged young man, she calls in the big guns to take care of business.

And seek vengeance against Detective Lena Adams, a woman she blames for the death of her police chief husband, Jeffrey, four years earlier.

Frankly, for me, there was too much history between these characters that was hinted at, without at least providing a little something for new readers, to make it feel incomplete.

No doubt readers familiar with the series will get it, and most likely not find the story to be unfinished and very choppy as I did.

On the upside, Broken did grab my attention enough that I’m going to go back to the first of the series to try and better gauge my interest.

So what exactly is my recommendation? Either start with the beginning or don’t start at all.
