Friday Fiction: Trail of Blood by Lisa Black (September 2010)

Suspense Thriller with a True Crime Basis
Review by Kim Cantrell

Life during the Depression was hard enough on the residents of Cleveland, Ohio, but to couple that with a serial killer on the loose and corrupt cops is enough to create chaos.

Fast forward to 2010. Medical Examiner Theresa MacLean is called out to a crime scene.

A crime scene that’s obviously 75-years-old, putting it front and center of the Mad Butcher’s reign; with the killer’s signature style beheading to boot.

Teaming up with her Cleveland Police Department Detective and cousin Frank Patrick, Theresa seeks the answers to a question that’s haunted the city of Cleveland for three quarters of a century: Who was the Torso Killer?

And it won’t be only ages old evidence they’re working with because The Torso Killer seems to have resurrected; identical crimes repeating, just at a much faster pace.

Can he be stopped this time or will be simply disappear again?

I’m a true crime junkie who likes to toss in a little suspense fiction for good measure. You put them together and you’re guaranteed to make me happy.

And that’s exactly what mystery writer Lisa Black has done with her latest book, Trail of Blood.

Based on the true story of The Torso Killer, also known as The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, a serial killer who prowled the steets of Cleveland during the 1930s – claiming a total of 13 known victims, but expected of killing as many as 40 in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

I can’t stress enough that, if you read ANY fiction whatsoever, you must add this book to your reading list. It’s one of the best you’ll read all year!
