Friday Fiction: Midnight Caller by Leslie Tentler (February 2011)

Eh, It’s Okay.
Review by Kim Cantrell

Let me begin this review with a confession: I’m not a very big fan of romantic mystery fiction. But every now and again (usually when provided a review copy), I’ll give it a shot.

That said -

Author Leslie Tentler’s latest romantic thriller focuses on Rain Sommers, is a psychologist and radio personality of Midnight Confessions, a late night talk show catering (mainly) to those of the Goth lifestyle – many of whom are a fan of her long dead mother, the infamous Desiree Sommers, singer and victim of a murder/suicide.

Shortly after a fifth murder victim of a serial killer surfaces in New Orleans, FBI Special Agent Trevor Rivette will comes home to catch a killer while facing his past demons.

When Rain receives a disturbing and cryptic call during her show from a man who calls himself Dante, Agent Rivette believes the killer is looking to the airwaves for his next intended victim.

Enough said.

While there’s definitely mystery and intrigue in Midnight Caller, there’s just a little too much of that silly dime-store romance crap mixed in. You know what I’m talking about, right? Where two otherwise intelligent characters ruin the story with their utter stupidity because it builds the tenion for the upcoming coupling.

Yuck.

But as admitted, I’m no fan of romantic fiction; even when it comes with suspense. In all fairness to the author, if you took out the romance it would an okay book. Not great, since there were too many unanswered questions and incomplete scenarios, but okay.

To put it in Amazon terms, I’d rate it three stars; an okay read, but nothing I’d rush to put on my “to be read” list.
