Inspirational True Crime
Review by Kim Cantrell
June 13, 2007 began like any other day for Eduardo and Jayne Garcia Valseca; like any other day for anyone. They awoke early, got the children fed and dressed, then headed out for the short journey to school.
But by sunset that evening, it would be a day like most people will never experience. It was the first day of captivity in a kidnapping for ransom scheme for Eduardo Garcia Valseca.
For the next eight months, Eduardo would be held prisoner in a small box – barely enough space for him to lie down or sit up – while his wife struggled to negotiate with radicals and their extraordinary, financially unfeasible ransom demands.
During his time as a kidnapping victim, Eduardo would be subjected to harsh physical and mental brutalities. How would he survive such? By drawing on childhood experiences while using what senses weren’t denied him to hopefully someday lead authorities to his captors.
Having been a survivor of breast cancer, the kidnappers didn’t know that courage, strength, and determination were less strangers than old friends to Jayne, and she would call upon them to help her in her efforts to bring Eduardo home.
While We Have Your Husband: One Woman’s Terrifying Story of a Kidnapping in Mexico is obviously a true crime story, it is just as much a testimonial as to how we can reach inside ourselves during life’s most troubled times and find the strength to pull us through - no matter the outcome.
I absolutely loved this story, and took away several lessons that I’ve stowed away in the unfortunate case I need them; but, you should be forewarned, if you don’t like your true crime mixed with a bit of a romantic story or that which may be construed as therapeutic journaling, then this one isn’t for you. Instead, you may prefer to watch the Dateline episode The Desperate Hours.
If, however, you appreciate a good book on a Mexican kidnapping for ransom case and the life lessons learned from it, then We Have Your Husband is a book you’ll want to put on your reading list.
